Documentary 1: All the queen's men

Summary:
This documentary is about Irish young men who serve in the British army. They say it is still controversial that Northern and Southern Irish men want to serve in the British army. This is because of Irish and British history. The men emigrate because there is no work at home or because they’ve always wanted to be in the army. In the 18th century the Irish recruits were banned because they thought they were unreliable. But in 1850, 50 per cent of the army was Irish again. The men tell there’s no coming back to where they came from. You can’t tell you parents or anybody else. So they’re quite lonely and isolated. Some soldiers make up stories so nobody will find out what they are really doing. Some feel as if they have left their own country.

My opinion:
This documentary was published on 15 April 2013, but you could see that it was recorded several years ago. So maybe this isn’t a big issue anymore nowadays. I don’t understand it was still a big issue back then. I knew the Irish weren’t very keen on Great Britain, but I didn’t know it was as bad as they tell in the documentary. It is a pity that those boys have to live a double life just to keep the peace between them and their families when they should be concerned about more important things. Their own lives in battle for example.
